Create new, or edit existing templates to create powerfull server groups. An example of this is if you have 5 game servers running the game type with one setting, and 5 game servers running another setting. By creating these settings as a Template, rather than making the same changes in all ten servers, you can simply add the template to the server during creation.
The additional benefit of this is that, in order to change the the settings on all ten servers when they are not using templates you would have to modify all 10 servers. When using templates for these sets, a change in the template will automatically update all game servers using this setting next restart.
An example of how the GameCreate team use this on their game servers is the following:
Rcon_passwords are subject to leaking by our Admin teams on our servers, however in a ordinary situation, a leak in rcon would involve modifying the 30 individual game servers managed for the game. By creating a template that just has rcon_password in it and binding that template to each server, when we need to perform a rcon_password change, we simply update the template with the new password, then perform a restart on the whole server group, which updates all servers to use the updated rcon password.
By doing this we effectively save hours of work logging into all hosts, and update individul game servers.
Multiple different game templates can be defined for various settings.
Game Templates are simply a subset of the game configuration, and game configuration will change dependant on the properties that are defined for that game for custom variables.
